Cherry Point facility cuts helicopter maintenance time by 14%, advances F-35 modernization

At Cherry Point, the work of keeping the Marine Corps moving is getting faster — and more technologically demanding.

Fleet Readiness Center East has cut maintenance turnaround time for CH-53E Super Stallion heavy-lift helicopters by 14 percent while completing the first operational upgrades of F-35B aircraft from the Technology Refresh 2 configuration to Technology Refresh 3. Together, the milestones make the facility at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point a driver of both helicopter readiness and cutting-edge fighter modernization for the U.S. military.

The Super Stallion is the Marine Corps' heavy-lift helicopter, used to move troops, equipment and supplies, particularly during amphibious assaults and ship-to-shore logistics missions. The gains came from optimized depot-level maintenance procedures and a streamlined H-53 production-line workflow, including improvements in handling major structural inspections, rotor blades and gearboxes. Cutting turnaround time means those helicopters return more quickly to operational units, directly improving Marine Corps combat power and fleet readiness.

At the same time, the Cherry Point workforce is leading a much broader modernization effort for the F-35 fleet.

Fleet Readiness Center East delivered F-35B airframe BF-105 with TR-3 upgrades on May 14, 2026, followed by BF-88 on May 21, 2026, marking the first operational conversions from TR-2 to TR-3. A third F-35B, airframe BF-81, was projected to complete its conversion in July 2026.

Those aircraft are the beginning of a multiyear depot campaign to upgrade more than 700 fielded F-35s worldwide. TR-3 gives the fighter more computing power and memory, allowing it to carry the larger software load and new mission systems required for the aircraft's Block 4 capabilities. Those capabilities include new sensor suites, more long-range precision weapons, improved electronic warfare, stronger data fusion and better interoperability with other platforms.

The two efforts draw on the breadth of technical expertise already concentrated at Cherry Point. Fleet Readiness Center East — described as North Carolina's largest maintenance, repair, overhaul and technical services provider — maintains and repairs Marine Corps rotary-wing and tiltrotor aircraft, as well as F-35s, F/A-18s and C-130s, and has component-level repair capability across nearly 200 aircraft types, models and series. Its workload includes the V-22 Osprey, AV-8B Harrier, F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet, MH-53E Sea Dragon, AH-1Z Viper, UH-1Y Venom and the H-60 Seahawk family. That range helps explain how a single eastern North Carolina facility has become central to both extending the usefulness of long-serving aircraft and introducing new technology across one of the military's most advanced fighter fleets.

That role is set to grow. The Navy awarded Walsh Federal nearly $488 million to build the first phase of an F-35 Aircraft Sustainment Center and a CH-53K Composite Repair Facility at Cherry Point, with construction expected to continue through about May 2030. The investment, coupled with specialized workforce skills and production-line efficiency, positions Cherry Point as a national hub for depot-level aviation maintenance and modernization.

The faster helicopter maintenance and the lead role in F-35 modernization show what the Cherry Point workforce — one of eastern North Carolina's largest employers — contributes beyond the installation's gates: the precision and speed needed to keep critical aircraft ready for service, with effects that reach far beyond the state's borders.
